Kitchen Conversion Sign

Maybe you're better than me at keeping it all stored in your head, but sometimes I need a little help with kitchen conversions. Of course, I remember the basics, but ask me the size of a dash or how many pints are in a quart and I may have to look it up.

So, I made a cute sign to keep the basics within eye shot.

I first stained a board with Dixie Belle's Voodoo Gel Stain in the color Denim. 

The board I used is from Signopoly.

This stain is water based so the clean up is easy & there's no odor. And, you don't have to wear gloves! 

While the stain was drying, I painted a wooden cutout of a mason jar (also from Signopoly) with Dixie Belle's paint color, Haint Blue. I used Silver Bullet with a little black detail for the lid.
I made a vinyl stencil that reads, kitchen conversions, with my Cricut Maker, then used the color Caviar to paint over it.

 I made another stencil with the conversion chart. I placed it on the board then painted over it with Dixie Belle's Clear Coat & let that dry. This will help create a barrier to prevent the paint from bleeding under the stencil.

 My favorite thing to stencil with is a makeup sponge! I used the color, Haint Blue for the chart.

 I used E6000 to glue the jar onto the board.

 Now the basic conversions are within eye shot!

Red, White, And Boho Star

Here's a twist on the typical stars & stripes decor.

For something a little different I added a touch of Boho style.

I started with a wooden star cutout from Signopoly. 

The grooves make it easy to paint & add design.

I painted the entire star with the color, Fluff, from the Dixie Belle Paint Compnay. Then I painted every other stripe with the color Honky Tonk.

For the Boho detail, I used the Caravans decor transfer from Re*design With Prima. The transfer works best if the paint has had plenty of time to dry. So I waited overnight before adding the transfer.

I made a template, then cut the transfer to fit the remaining sections of the star.

I used the applicator tool that comes

with the transfer to rub the design onto the star.

I pressed the applicator tool down into the grooves to push the transfer into them so I wouldn't lose that detail.

To finish off the star and accentuate the grooves in the wood, I added wax. On the painted stripes, I first added clear wax. This makes the dark wax easy to manipulate and not be too hard to lighten on the matte finish of the paint. I didn't worry about the clear wax getting into the grooves because I wanted them to be dark. The area with the transfer didn't need it because it is a slick surface.

Then I added black wax down into the grooves in the wood, & also in the grooves of the transfer, & along the edges of the star, then wiped them back to smooth out the wax & give it a softer appearance.

My New Favorite Color

 With 69 colors, it's hard to pick a favorite Dixie Belle Paint color. But, what I'm loving right now is Antebellum Blue.

I knew it would be a great color when paired with black wax to bring out the detail in this little harp table...

It's such a gorgeous shade of blue with just a hint of green...

Once the table was painted, I applied Dixie Belle's Clear Best Dang Wax. Doing this helps control the depth of the black wax.

I applied the Black Best Dang Wax with a stiff wax brush making sure it got it into all the detail areas...

 Then I wiped it back with a rag...

 The wax highlights all the beautiful detail...

 So, for today at least, Antebellum Blue is my favorite color.

Sew Pretty Table Makeover

There was a time when sewing tables were beautiful and made to fit in with your decor. When your sewing machine was tucked away, the cabinet looked and functioned as a table.

The sewing machine was missing from this one that I found in an antique store, but I knew it would be beautiful as an end table.

 I also knew that a little paint would bring out the detail. I chose the color Dusty Blue from the Dixie Belle Company.

 I added a little black glaze to highlight some of the detail.

This is the perfect example of the phrase, "they don't make 'em like they used to!"

Red, White, & Bloom

Memorial Day, 4th Of July, Labor Day...

Summer is filled with patriotic holidays in the US. And, I love decorating with red, white, & blue. I leave my patriotic decor up from May through September, then I go right to my other love...Fall decor!

And, of course, being artsy/crafty, much of my decor is homemade.

This is a fun craft project to do with the kids. It's easy & inexpensive.

I used paint from the Dixie Belle Paint Company in the colors, Bunker Hill Blue, Honky Tonk Red, & Cotton. Acrylic paint will work too.

You'll also need a glass container with flat sides, craft sticks that are taller than the container, star stickers, a rubber band, a string, & E6000 glue.

 Wrap a string around the glass container to measure the circumference. Place craft sticks side by side & use the string the determine how many sticks you need to wrap around the container.

Paint some of the sticks white to represent the white stripes of the flag. Also, paint sticks white that will become the blue section of the flag.

 Place the star stickers on the white sticks that will become blue.

 Use the blue to paint over the sticks with the stars. When dry, peel up the stickers to reveal the white stars.

 Paint the remaining sticks red.

 Place a rubber band around the glass container. Apply E6000 to the back of the craft sticks, then insert them between the glass & the rubber band. 

 Leave the rubber band to hold the craft sticks in place until the glue has dried completely.

 Once the glue has dried, remove the rubber band and your vase is ready to fill with water & your favorite flowers.
