Making Something Good, Better

Michael's had these great magnetic calendars for $3.
 Yes, you heard right, $3!!!
I love the vintage look of the pictures on them...

What I didn't like about them is that the magnets that highlight the day and month were left plain...

We can't have that now, can we?
That's nothing that a little glue, a few buttons, and some bling won't fix!
I printed out some sheet music from The Graphics Fairy website...
On the back of the paper, I traced around the magnet...

I cut out the paper making sure to cut larger than the drawings so the paper would wrap around to the back of the magnet. I clipped the corners so the paper wouldn't get bulky. On the inside section, I cut a line from the corner of the paper inward to the corner of the drawn outline...
Then I glued it to the magnet.
Then I folded the paper around the magnet. It looks pretty good just with the paper added to it, but why stop there?
For the sunflower calendar, I added old buttons to the magnets...

For the camellia calendar, I added vintage clip on earrings that I took the backs off of...

For the calendar with the berries, I covered the magnet with a napkin that had the same colors in it as the graphic on the calendar and then added some buttons...

Covering the magnetic frames made a huge improvement!
And, it was inexpensive. Everything I used was something that I had on hand. And, the calendars went from being good, to being much, much better!

The Old Door...NOT

I rent space in 2 different stores where I sell things I make, vintage & antique items, and art. One of the stores had an unsightly door. It's the bathroom door and it's right in the middle of the store!
It is a hollow door that had been primed but never painted. It was dirty and the trim around it wasn't in much better shape.

The above pictures don't exactly tell the true story of how ugly the door was.
I talked to the landlord and he agreed to let me paint the door however I chose.
I wanted the door to look old with chipping paint.
Here's what I came up with...
I measured the center panels and used a yard stick to draw 4 inch wide faux boards.

I also painted the trim around the door to match.
I used acrylic paint from the craft store so it only cost about $4 to transform the door. So, it's a lot of bang for the buck!

Silhouettes

I love the projects I get from the Goodwill!!!
I recently bought these 3 plaques for $1.51 for the set.

They were dated and I knew I wouldn't use them in their present state, but would figure out something to do with them.
I decided to make silhouettes for a little girls' room.

I started by painting them white.
I had planned on painting them white and black, but decided they would be really cute it they were black and blue.
I added turquoise paint to the white until I got a Tiffany blue...

I painted the borders of the plaques with black paint...

Using my Cricut, I cut out 3 designs...
a chandelier, a crown, and a perfume bottle.
I stenciled the designs onto the plaques with black paint.

Now the plaques are fit for a princess!

Sand Dollar Pendant

This sand dollar pendant is easy to make and is a great keepsake from a beach trip!
On one of my trips to the Gulf coast,  there were a lot of sand dollars washed up on the beach. I did NOT kill them!!! They had already met their demise.
Some were small enough to fit on a Scrabble tile so I decided to make pendants.
Here's what you'll need to make the pendant...
 Supplies:
sand dollar
Scrabble tile
bail
E6000 glue
White acrylic paint
Black acrylic paint
Diamond Glaze

The How To:

The sand dollars are a dark color...
I gave it a couple of coats of white acrylic paint...

I painted the Scrabble tile black...

Once both of those pieces dried, I glued the sand dollar to the tile.
Then I added a few coats of Diamond Glaze. This works as a sealer to protect the piece and gives it a nice thick coating.
I finished it off by gluing a bail to the back.
  Super easy!!!
The hardest part of this project was finding the sand dollars!

"Give Us This Day" Tray Makeover

Paint can transform a piece and really make the details stand out. I bought this tray at the Goodwill for $1.91.
"Give us this day our daily bread" and a picture were carved in the center. You could hardly make out the design...

So, I got out my Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and painted the tray...
To make the details stand out, I applied a brown acrylic paint to the recessed areas...

Then, using a damp rag, I wiped away the excess paint...
Here you can see how the design looks with the brown paint and without...
And,
the finished product...
