Am I Plum Crazy?

Some people may say that I'm plum crazy
for painting a silver plated tray.
However, they make a great canvas.
Silver plated trays are abundant at thrift stores, and garage and estate sales. I got this one for only $2...
If it were real silver, of course, I would have never used it for this project. But, since it was silver plated, and I already have plenty of my own that I do use, I decided to do something fun with it that I would actually use and not stick in a drawer.
I painted the tray with 2 coats of Plum Crazy chalk paint from Dixie Belle. Once the paint dried, I used a damp rag to distress it and let some of the silver show through.

Next, I covered the tray with Liming Wax, and then wiped away the excess.

Liming wax doesn't leave a waxy, oily feeling finish like other waxes.

I drew a design with chalk onto the tray, then started painting with acrylic paint...

I added some black highlights...

Once the paint was dry, I went over the cupcake icing with gel medium to add texture...

While the gel medium was still wet, I sprinkled on seed beads...

Hello cupcake!

So, do you think I'm plum crazy?
Wait...don't answer that!
This tray has brought a smile to many faces.
It wouldn't do that if it were stuck in a drawer!

Plaster Of Paris Flowers

Have you made Plaster Of Paris flowers yet? Well, if not, be prepared (when you do make them) to want to put them on everything! When you look at everyday items, you will wonder, "how would that look if I add a few flowers?"
So, when I saw these jars at the thrift store, I grabbed them knowing that they were crying out for flowers!

To make the flowers, I simply cut fake flowers, leaving a little of the stem to hold onto...

then dipped them into Plaster Of Paris...

I gave it a little shake and let the excess drip off.

I laid the flowers on wax paper to harden.

While the flowers were drying, I painted the wooden top of the jars with chalk paint. I used Dixie Belle paint in the color, Drop Cloth.
Drop Cloth is the same color as the plaster so I didn't have to paint the flowers to match.

When the flowers had hardened, I cut the stem as close to the flower as I could get...

Then I glued the flowers onto the jar lids using E6000.

When I bought the jars, I had no idea what their final purpose would be. I just wanted to make them pretty. Then it hit me that they would be perfect in my guest bathroom. So, I filled them with Q-tips, cotton balls, and small soaps...

For now, my pretty jars will have a home in the guest bathroom. But, I may have to move them to my bathroom so I can enjoy them everyday!

Denim Canvas: Georgia On My Mind

Have you seen the new denim canvas at Michael's?

I picked one up recently and used it to create a super easy project featuring my beloved State of Georgia.
I found clip art online that was the outline of Georgia. I sized it to fit on the denim canvas, and printed it out, then cut it out.

I laid it on the canvas and traced around it with a piece of chalk.

I painted inside the chalk lines with Gesso.

I printed sheet music of the song, Georgia On My Mind. I printed it in reverse so the words wouldn't be backwards.
After the Gesso dried, I covered the state with ModPodge.
I laid the printed sheet music face down on the canvas.

Then I rubbed, and rubbed, and rubbed the paper to smooth it out. I even flipped the canvas over and rubbed the back with a hotel key card.

I peeled the paper up, leaving the image on the "state."
It's ok not to have perfect coverage. That just adds to it!

I used Valspar antiqueing glaze along the edges of the state by painting it on with a paint brush...

then blending it with a damp rag...

I went over the edge of the state and onto the canvas with the glaze to leave a dark edge.

I then painted a heart over my area of Georgia,
using red acrylic paint.

I used black acrylic to darken the edges off the heart.

This project was easy, inexpensive, and quick!
It's a great way to show your State pride.
Where are you from and what song would you add yo your art?
