Anique Chest Of Drawers Makeover With Milk Paint

I know a sweet lady named Brenda who recently lost her mother. When Brenda was preparing for an estate sale of her mother's belongings, she let me come look at what she had before the sale. I bought a lot of items from her including this antique chest of drawers that dates back to the late 1800's.

It was a beautiful and solid piece of furniture, but it had a few issues. The veneer was missing from the top and on a section of one of the doors...

I knew I wanted to paint her, and my paint of choice lately is milk paint. I chose Light Cream from The Old Fashioned Milk Paint Company. I love milk paint because it does the distressing for you. I gave her 3 coats of paint and sat back and waited for the magic to happen...

Once the paint started to chip, I used a hotel room key card to gently scrape away the loose paint...

Once I finished this beauty, someone else fell in love with her and she sold in one day!

I'm sure that Brenda will be happy to know that her mother's chest of drawers is now being loved by a new family.

Paisley Prism: More Adventures in Upholstery

Not long ago, I posted a chair that I had recovered and said it was probably the first and last chair I would upholster. I know, I know, never say never. But, when I saw this one at an estate sale, it didn't look as though the difficulty level would be as high!

The chair was in great condition except for this stain...
Plus, I wasn't fond of the fabric.
So, why not try recovering just one more chair?

I started by removing the fabric underneath the chair to unscrew the seat from the chair...

Once the seat was removed, I pulled off the cording...

Then I pulled off the fabric...

I gave the dark wood a coat of paint I had leftover from an old project.

For the front of the chair, I used the fabric that I had removed to make a pattern. But for the back, I found that it worked better to staple on a larger piece of fabric then cut away the excess. The fabric I chose is called Paisley Prism by Waverly.

Some of the staples had to hammered in a little.

I covered the staples with trim using E6000.

Once the trim was on, I covered the seat
and screwed it back onto the chair.

After finishing this upholstered chair, I will NOT say that I will never recover a chair. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure that I will tackle another. After all, practice makes perfect!

July Fourth Banner

Time goes by so quickly! It seems as though I was just posting projects for Christmas, and suddenly it's already time for July 4th projects.

This banner is a fun and festive way to show your pride
in the stars and stripes.

To make this banner, you'll need...

12” x 12” scrapbook paper in red, white, & blue colors and patterns

Scissors

Ruler

pencil

Tacky glue

Small hole punch

Regular size hole punch

Brads

Cupcake liners

Buttons

Jute

Rubber stamp and ink, or red marker to write out 4th

Strips of fabric or ribbon. I used denim and burlap.

Cut scrapbook paper in half so that you have 4 pieces that measure 12 inches high x 6 inches wide. Using a ruler, measure over 3 inches from the sides and up 3 inches from the bottom. Draw a line from each bottom corner up to the 3 inch mark to form a triangle. Cut out the triangle. This becomes the base for each section of the banner that we will call the pennant.

Fold the top edge down approximately 1 inch.

To embellish each section of the banner, cut wide strips of scrapbook paper and glue to the pennant using Tacky glue. Flatten cupcake liners and glue to the center of the strip of paper.

Cut out letters to spell the word, JULY. I cut out letters using a white pattern paper and then cut the letters slightly larger to create a shadow in red. I used a Cricut to cut the letters, but you can buy letters pre-cut or cut by hand. Glue the letters to the cupcake liners that have been glued to the center of each pennant.

Add more cupcake liners, buttons, and pinwheels to embellish each pennant further.

To make a pinwheel, cut scrapbook paper into a perfect square. Cut from each corner towards the center of the square stopping about a half inch from the center. On one corner of each section that you just cut, make a hole using a small hole punch. Use the small hole punch to make a hole in the center of the square. Thread each section of the square onto a brad then place the brad through the center hole. Close the ends of the brad to secure.

For the “4th”, cut a 4 inch circle out of the white paper. Cut another circle out of red paper slightly larger than 4 inches to form a shadow. Using a regular hole punch, cut a hole at the top of the two circles. Glue the circles together and add a piece of jute through the hole. Use a stamp to add “4th” in red ink or hand write it using a marker.

Tie the circle to the center of a 6 foot piece of jute. Tie strips of fabric or ribbon onto the jute on each side of the circle. Add the pennants by gluing the jute into the fold created earlier. Add strips of fabric or ribbon between each pennant.

This is a fun project that the kids can help with too. It can be adapted to fit any holiday. While you're at it, you might as well make one for Christmas. It'll be here before you know it!
