Salon Cabinet Makeover

Recently, my good friend, Barbara, was working on giving her hair salon a makeover. She showed me a little white cabinet & said she thought she would paint it. To which I replied, "you know what you should do? Let me paint it." She was more than happy with that so it went home with me & I went to work without her having any idea what I'd do to her little white cabinet.

This piece had a shiny, slick surface so I gave it  2 coats of Dixie Belle's Bonding Boss to help the paint adhere. It works as a primer to not only help the paint adhere, but also blocks odors & bleed through.

Barbara had given me a piece of the light, gold wallpaper that would go on a few accent walls & I wanted to pull that in to the cabinet. So, I painted the recessed sections of the cabinet with 2 coats of the Moonshine Metallic color, Gold Digger.

Since the Gold Digger was too dark, & I wanted to add a little texture, I did a crosshatch pattern over the gold with the metallic color, Wedding Bells.

Before painting the rest of the cabinet, I added a little petroleum jelly to the perimeter of the gold. This helps make it easier to remove any paint that gets on the gold.

After painting the cabinet with 2 coats of the Silk color, Anchor, from Dixie Belle, I used a paper towel to wipe off any of the black paint that was on the gold. I did have a little touch up to do, but the petroleum jelly made it so much easier & faster.

Since I had gold on the cabinet & the wallpaper was gold, I changed out the silver knobs to black.

I chose a black knob & used my finger to add just a touch of gold gilding wax to the raised areas & edges of the knobs.

The cabinet had a marble top that Barbara wanted to keep & it looks great with the black & gold.

The most important thing is that Barbara loved it!

Tree Frog And The Flower Child

This is one of those projects that I was so excited about starting that I forgot the "before" picture. But, we've all seen them... traditional little side table, stained, with a faux leather top.

This one was not in the best shape & needed some love. The bottom had a few scratches, but the leather top was in really bad shape.

To bring this little table back to life, I started by painting the wood with the color, Tree Frog, from the Dixie Belle Paint Company. Tree Frog is one of my favorite colors!

Tree Frog is such a bright, vibrant color, that it's not for everyone. But, when you add a dark wax or glaze over the paint, it tones it down. So, I added Dixie Belle's Best Dang Wax in black.

I used a stiff bristle brush to add the black wax to the grooves & any recessed detail. I put the wax on heavy, then wiped it back with a rag.

I left the wax heavy in the grooves & used the wax left on the rag to add a thin layer of wax over the rest of the table. This not only tones down the green, but also seals the paint.

As I said earlier, the leather top was in bad shape. Even painting it with the color, Caviar,  didn't hide the imperfections. So, I grabbed the Flower Child transfer from Dixie Belle to hide the damage.

With the transfers, you remove the white backing, position the design where you want it, then rub over the design with a burnishing tool that comes with it.

I burnish over the entire design, then start lifting the plastic cover, burnishing towards where I'm lifting as I go. If any of the design comes up with the plastic, I lay it back down & burnish until it adheres.

The sections of the design line up easily.

Some parts of the design I overlapped as I went around the table with the transfer.

I made sure to continue the transfer on the sides of the top of the table.

I know this look isn't for everyone. However, every piece I've painted with Tree Frog has sold quickly. And, this piece was no exception.

I had this table for sale in a local shop. I live in a town with a large film studio & someone from the studio came in looking for whimsical furniture. SOLD!

I have no idea if it was purchased for a movie or tv show. If you happen to spot it, please let me know!!!

Secret Path To A Table Makeover

Have you heard? Dixie Paint Paint Company has added 6 new colors to their chalk mineral paint line. That brings the number of colors they offer to 75! A few of those 75 colors have been semi retired & come in 4oz only, but are still available. So, if one of those colors is a favorite, you cam still get it. Thank goodness, because I love Tree Frog Green!

I have had this unfinished wood table for quite some time. I just couldn't decide what I wanted to do with it.

Once the new colors came out, I decided that Secret Path was the perfect color for the table. It's a beautiful mauve color.

I grabbed my favorite synthetic brush, the Dixie Belle Mini, & gave the table 2 coats of Secret Path.

It would have been pretty left alone, but I had the Cacti & Succulent transfer & loved how the colors worked with Secret Path. I always wait at least 24 hours after painting before adding a transfer. So, the following day, I picked a part of the design that I wanted to use for the top of the table. The transfer package comes with 4 sheets that have different designs.

I removed the white backing from the transfer, then started rubbing over the clear top sheet with the tool provided to transfer the design onto the table. Please note: the piece I'm pulling up in the photo appears white the way the light hits it, but in actuality it is clear.

The design was a perfect fit!

Once the design was transferred, I buffed over it with a rag to make sure every piece of the design was adhered.

Finally, I used Dixie Belle's Easy Peasy Spray Wax to seal the table. It really is easy peasy... just shake, spray, & smooth out & your done!

Problem Solving With Mud

At first glance, this table I picked up at a yard sale appears to be in good condition. It's one of those pieces that some would say, "It's real wood. Why are you painting that?" Well, first of all, some pieces just look better painted. Second, some pieces have issues & painting them is the best option to save them from the dump.

Upon further inspection, I found that this table had a lot of issues that needed attention. The top was not only scratched, it had large patches of white areas.

And, then there's the drawer pull. I like vintage pulls & try to use them when I can. But this one was missing the ring that hangs down to pull the drawer open. So the only way to open it was to grab the sides of the drawer & pull. So, I knew it had to be replaced.

Not only did I have holes left behind from the screws, the drawer pull left an uneven finish. The best way to fix it? Dixie Mud.

I started by filling the holes left from the screws.

To hide the uneven finish, I decided to do a raised stencil on the front of the drawer using the Lotus Bloom stencil from the Dixie Belle Paint Company.

I held the stencil in place then went over it with the Dixie Mud.

I pulled the stencil up while the mud was still wet, then allowed it to dry overnight.

Once dry, I gave the mud a light sanded to remove any uneven areas or peaks.

I was using Dixie Belle's acrylic based paint, Silk, on this piece. Silk requires a light scuff sanding. After sanding, I decided better safe than sorry, so I also did 2 coats of Slick Stick on the base of the table. Slick Stick helps paint adhere better to slick or shiny surfaces.

I waited 24 hours after applying the Slick Stick, then painted the base of the table with the color, Hampton Olive.

Since I had to replace the original drawer pull,  I grabbed a mold & air dry modeling material from Re*design With Prima, created a medallion, & glued it onto a wooden knob.

After painting the knob with Hampton Olive, I drilled a new hole for the pull, & added it to the drawer. I used Dixie Belle's water based Voodoo Gel Stain in the color, Tobacco Road, to accentuate the raised detail on the drawer & the knob. I did this by painting the stain on, then wiping it back with a damp rag.

For the top of the table, I used Dixie Belle's oil based No Pain Gel Stain in the color, Walnut. No Pain Gel Stain can be applied directly over a factory finish. I did 3 coats waiting 10 hours between each coat. It completely covered those white patches.

I sealed the top with Dixie Belle's Gloss Clear Coat.
Silk has a built in sealer, so I did not seal the painted base.

Another piece saved from the dump!
