The Scretary Gets A Makeover

No, not a secretary "person", 

a secretary "desk".

A friend of a friend called me about painting their desk.

It's not very big, but it has lots of nooks and crannies...

I worked on this piece everyday for a week!

At first, I thought the secretary should not get a makeover.

She was a natural beauty.

But, she turned out quite lovely with her makeover...

 The paint color is Sherwin William's, Anjou Pear.

I antiqued it with a raw umber glaze and finished her off with a couple of coats of polyurethane.

 I have to admit, even though at first I thought she shouldn't be painted, I do like her better after her makeover.

Chalkboard Love

Who doesn't love a chalkboard?!!

Well, maybe my son. He gets a little tired of me saying, 

"ooh look at that. I could turn that into a cool chalkboard!"

I couldn't resist...

I had to turn this cabinet door into a chalkboard.

It was screaming at me, "I'm a chalkboard!"

I love the simplicity of the black and white but it needed something.

I had some fabric left over from a banner I made for my space a Earth Mamas General Store so I made pennants for the chalkboard.

I added glue only to the top edge of the fabric and glued it in place.

Even my son can't deny that this is one cute chalkboard!

Another Heater Project

On the same day, at the same store where I bought the antique heater that I turned into garden art...

 I bought this old kerosene heater...

I loved the blue color.

I immediately envisioned it as a table.

I already had this wooden table top that I purchased for another project that I never finished.

The kerosene heater was hollow and already had holes in the top that screws could fit through...

With the help of my son (because my arms were to short to reach),

the wooden disc was screwed onto the heater.

I gave it a coat of stain...

 And finished it off with several coats of polyurethane.

This is one of those pieces that I originally planned to sell, but fell in love with it and had to keep!

I tried it in a couple of different places,

 but it is perfect on my screened porch...

The Patriotic Nest

What do you do when your kids don't clean up after themselves?

CRAFT,

of course.

After my daughter made the flags that I recently posted...

she left a pile of fabric scraps on the kitchen counter.

When I gathered them up to throw away,

they reminded me of a nest.

Then I thought of this adorable ornament

 that a friend gave me for Christmas...

I had already decided when I got it that I would try to make some of my own. It appeared as though it was made using a lid to a box...

I had a box that some little eggs that I bought years ago came in and I knew it would be the perfect thing to hold my patriotic nest.

The one given to me was covered in fabric, but I decided mine would be fine without it.

Using another scrap of fabric, I traced around the box lid with a Sharpie on the back side of the fabric.

I cut inside the line so that my circle of fabric would 

fit inside the lid. Then, I glued the circle into the lid.

So that I would be able to hang the ornament when finished, 

I cut a piece of jute and glued it to the back of the lid. I put a quart size can of paint on it to hold it in place until the glue dried..

I bunched up the scraps of fabric and glued them 

 into the lid to form a nest.

Then I glued in this cute little bird...

This would make a great ornament on a tree 

with an Americana theme.

But, it is cute enough to hang around the house all year long!
