Welcome Fall With A Hand Painted Window

Nothing says Autumn like pumpkins. And, they're not just for Halloween! Pumpkins are the perfect addition to your Fall decor all the way through Thanksgiving. So, I hand painted a window with a welcoming pumpkin theme. 

After giving an old window a good cleaning, I spelled out the word, WELCOME, using vinyl letters that I purchased at Michael's.

I made sure all the letters were pressed down so paint wouldn't seep under the vinyl.

Then I hand painted pumpkins on the window...

When the paint was dry, I peeled up the vinyl letters...

Of course, I could have just painted, welcome, on the window, but using the vinyl allows you to see through the letters which adds another dimension.

This window will be perfect on the mantel or on the porch!

The Welcome Window

Today I am sharing a cute project I did for my front porch.

I bought an old window frame for $5. I have lots of old windows in my garage that were given to me for free, but I liked this one because the glass was missing. I also liked the fact that there were no horizontal slats, only one vertical.

I had this metal flower bucket that I haven't used in years...

It was perfect for this project except for the fact that it says, "Summer Garden." That would be fine for summer, but I want to use it year round. So, I cut a strip of burlap large enough to cover the letters and glued it onto the bucket with E6000...

Then, I made a banner with the rest of the burlap. I stamped the word, "Welcome" on the banner...

I attached the triangles of burlap to a hemp cord using E6000...

I put heavy things on the burlap to make sure it stayed attached to the cord...

Once my glue was dry on the bucket and the banner, I attached them to the window frame. I put floral foam in the bucket and added some sticks I got out of my yard...

I love how this turned out. It's a great way to welcome my guests. Now, if I can just get them to use the front door!

 

Beaver Wars

Bear with me...

I'll get to the creative part of this post in a minute.

We have an ongoing war going on on our property.

A war with beavers!

Actually, my husband has a war going on with beavers. 

We live on a 20 acre lake and have several creeks on our property that feed the lake.

Every winter the beavers start chopping down our trees and damming up our creeks.

These pictures were taken back in January...

This is a beaver dam...

This is my husband preparing for battle...

Let the war begin...

Tearing out the beaver dam...

Ah...the sound of rushing water...

They really are fascinating creatures! They can take down multiple trees and build a dam overnight!

On this particular day, my husband pulled out two 16 foot long boards that the beavers drug from the neighbors yard and put in their dam!

Eventually the war is over!

Beaver builds dam.

Man tears out dam.

Beaver rebuilds dam overnight.

Man tears out dam... again.

Beaver rebuilds dam overnight... again.

And so on and so on.

Then beaver moves on to aggravate someone else.

On the bright side, the beaver leaves behind lots of cool sticks.

So, when life hands you beavers, make a trellis...

(Now for the creative part...)

I arranged some of the sticks on the ground and my husband screwed them together.

We put our beaver stick trellis where I had planted a clematis.

We have a lot more sticks to use for other projects...

I'm thinking, arbor!

Here's another beaver stick I used to hang a window from...

I laid the stick across 2 shepherd hooks and screwed 2 hooks in to it to go through 2 eye hooks I put in the top of an old window. I love how it looks hanging in my zinnia garden!

For now, we have a little reprieve from the beavers, but in about 5 months it'll be war again!

Bottle Makeover with WoodUBend

 I love old bottles! I have a collection of them in my kitchen window. And, I find it hard to throw away new ones. They may not be beautiful or unique like my vintage ones, but they can be! So, I like to give them a makeover.

When I finished this bottle of vinegar, I ran it through the dishwasher then painted it with one coat of the color Vintage Duck Egg from the Dixie Belle Paint Company.

Once the paint was dry, I added a piece of WoodUBend trim around the top of the bottle, & a flower to the center using E6000 glue. WoodUBend is flexible once you apply heat to it, so it can be wrapped around any shape. 

I painted over the bottle and the WoodUBend with another coat of Vintage Duck Egg.

Once the paint was dry, I covered the WoodUBend with Dixie Belle glaze in the color, Van Dyke Brown.

I put the glaze on heavy, then wiped it back with a damp rag.

When the glaze was dry, I rubbed on Dixie Belle Gilding Wax in the color Hammered Copper.

This bottle may not be old like the ones in my collection, but I think it's just as beautiful!
