Have you ever painted with stain? I don't mean just staining...I mean painting a design with stain. I have seen some beautiful pieces with elaborate designs that use different color stains. I tried my hand at painting with stain with a simple design on a beverage cooler.
My friend, Chuck, makes awesome coolers using cedar. He had a New Orleans Saints fan who wanted a fleur de lis painted on the front of a cooler. So, he cut the cedar to size for the front of the cooler and gave it to me to paint the design.
I lined up the boards and drew the fleur de lis with chalk. Then I started painting with VooDoo Gel Stain from the Dixie Belle Paint Company. This stain is water based and makes clean up easy.
I chose the color Tobacco Road.
I left areas I wanted as a highlight blank.
I filled in the highlights with Dixie Belle's Bronze Patina Paint, then added some shadows with Dixie Belle's oil based gel stain in the color, Espresso.
Once I finished my part, Chuck built the cooler and the Saints fan was very happy!
Now I'm waiting on the perfect piece to try my hand at something a little more elaborate!

It looks beautiful! I love the aged look stain gives it as opposed to paint. :)
