4 DIY Cable Spool Projects

I have said before that I have friends who often give me stuff. And, a couple of weeks ago my friend, Kelli, gave me a bunch of cable spool ends. Kelli and her husband own a pallet company. Having a friend with a pallet company is liking winning the lottery for a DIYer!!! My son filled up the truck yesterday with pallets... I'll share what he's making soon.

Back to the cable spool ends...

Here are the projects created so far...
For the first project I painted a clock face on a spool.

Next, I had my son screw a galvanized bucket to a spool that I had stained. It makes a great coffee table for the porch. It can be flipped over and used as a beverage tub during parties.

My son, John, used different color stains for each section of one of the spools, then added a design to one section using an artists paper that had a skeleton graphic. It's creepy but cool! Then he added legs with casters that he got at IKEA...

For the final completed project, I painted stars and stripes on a spool then added red metal legs from IKEA...

Any suggestions?

The Painted Chair

My children really need to start their own blog!
It seems more and more often I post projects that they have created. This is another one of those posts.

My daughter, Carrie, wanted this chair for her room...
 Really?!!!
I asked her what in the world she was going to do with it. Of course, she's like her mother and can't leave anything alone!
She said she was going to paint it.
I'm not one to stifle creativity, so of course I bought it for her.

Here's the finished product...

It turned out fantastic!

She used acrylic paint and watered it down just a tiny bit.
I'm sure fabric paint would work also.
I shared this on Facebook and someone told me that you can wax over it to soften up the paint a little. It is a little stiff, but then again, so are wooden chairs, so it doesn't bother Carrie. And it's her chair after all!

So, if you have a chair and are afraid to try upholstery...
paint it!

Home Decor Score At America's Mart

I was at the Atlanta Merchandise Mart a couple of weeks ago when I ran into a friend. She was working at one of the showrooms doing inventory in preparation for the Gift Show that started today. She told me to make sure I stopped by that showroom because they had a lot of items at 70% off of wholesale! Please, twist my arm!
I bought a lot of items from them, but my favorite was this pair of metal cloches. They were originally $25 wholesale for the set.
 Have you done the math?
70% off of wholesale means that I got them for $7.50 for the pair!!!

I decided to keep one and sell the other. Although I'll probably wish I had kept them both! Oh well, too late!

For the one that I kept, I added a nest that I found after some trees were cut down at Earth Mama's General Store. It was in great condition and was the perfect size to fit in the larger cloche.

I added 3 little faux eggs to the nest.

So for $3.25 I have a lovely new accessory!

Oh, and I sold the other one for $15! So, technically, I didn't even spend $3.25. That's my kind of shopping!!!

Estate Sales, Needlepoint, And Milk Paint

I have found some pretty great pieces of furniture at estate sales lately. I've already shared this estate sale chair that I painted and reupholstered...

I also shared this estate sale find... an antique chest of drawers that I painted with milk paint...

So, while I'm at it, I'd like to share this needlepoint chair from an estate sale...

Back in my early teens, I loved to do needlepoint. But, I don't think I would have had the heart to let anyone sit on mine! There is so much time and patience that goes into needlepoint. It's a beautiful art form and I wish it would come back into popularity.
I have actually started filling up a small wall in my house from floor to ceiling with framed needlepoint. I hope to share that soon.

So, back to the chair.
She was a perfectly lovely chair.
The seat was in great shape.
The wood was in good condition.
She just seemed tired!
She just needed a little something.
And the something I chose was milk paint.
The color...Bayberry...
It's no secret that I love the chippy finish of milk paint.
A little color was just what the paint doctor ordered!
She no longer looks tired, she looks...

HAPPY!

Here is another small table that I bought at an estate sale. I painted it with milk paint in one of my favorite colors, pumpkin.

Are you an estate sale shopper?
If so, what's you best purchase?
