To Glaze or Not To Glaze?

Yes! That is the question!
I have been making my own chalk paint and have been really pleased with it. I am still trying to get used to using the wax.
For now, I still like to use glaze. I like how easily it goes on and the look you get from it. I like that it is not sticky. Maybe it's the humid Georgia days, but it seems as though I can buff the wax until it feels nice and smooth and not sticky and then a few days later, bam, sticky again! I'm still going to use the wax for some pieces, but when I have a piece I want to finish quickly...
glaze it is.

I bought this cute little table at an auction...
I mixed up some chalk paint using a small jar of "oops" paint I bought at Lowe's.
It was only 50 cents! It's amazing how far these little sample size paints will go. It easily covered the table and a friend used it to paint a small table she had too!

I like to use clear glaze and add in the color I want using acrylic paint. In this case, the color I added to the glaze was raw umber.
The table looked fine without the glaze, but adding it just gives it a little something.

The clean up is also easier with glaze and I don't end up with brown under my nails that I can't get out!

  1. Oh, it turned out nicely! I'm with ya. I don't love wax myeself. Totally a glaze or minwax stain lover. Thanks for sharing, i love the look with the raw umber. One of my favorites! ;)

  2. Looks much better with the glaze. It just seems to bring out the warmth of it and takes it up a notch! Great project!

  3. Love the color....just waiting to start on my new family room....hoping to do gray's and browns! Your table looks awesome!

  4. I like this! Wonder about trying it on kitchen cabinets?

  5. I love this. I have an end table that I bought and I need to figure out what to do with it. I have a link party on Wednesdays, and I would love it if you would link this and any other posts. It is called Wednesdays Adorned From Above Link Party. It runs from Wednesday to Sundays.
I hope to see you there. I am your newest follower, and I would love for your to follow me also. Have a great Day.

  6. That is so lovely. Oh I wish I had your talent. You are inspiring!

  7. I live in SC so i know what you mean about the wax. I tend to stick with glaze in really humid weather unless the piece can sit in the house a while for the wax to cure. Love this library table's finish!

  8. It looks fine with or without it. I believe it's a personal choice, cute table though!

  9. Great job! I have a little table that I bought from Goodwill for $5 that I plan to work on - now I think I might just have to try this chalk paint I'm hearing so much about on my little gem - thanks for the inspiration! {stopping by from the Weekend Wrap Up - Tatertots and Jello}

  10. Oh yes I do like the glaze. This turned out beautifully. Thank you for sharing at the Thursday Favorite Things blog hop . I hope you have a wonderful weekend. xo

  11. I have never used glaze. I think it looks wonderful! Thank you for sharing this at Rustic Restorations Weekend!

  12. I say glaze it! I also struggle with paste and I like the look of glaze because it makes the colors vary so interestingly - good luck! I also just bought a table like this for $4.00 and can't decide how to paint it!!

  13. You always have the best finds! I love the table! I've been debating on trying the DIY chalk paint. You may have convinced me! Thanks for sharing at the Pomp Party! Pinning!

  14. I have been using the wax lately and find it a bit harder to work with than glaze. I just used it on some urns I redid. Really liked how they turned out. I still love glazing, but it's kind of fun to mix it up. I am a tub person and bathe nightly. Luckily I can get that wax out with a bit of scrubbing. Course I have no nails. lol! Great job on the table. Thanks for sharing it with Share Your Cup.

  15. Dear Artsy Vava,

I was wondering if i could use your Canvas with origami on it as an influential image in my year11 art folio. (see this link to remind you which artwork> http://diyhshp.blogspot.com.au/2011/06/feature-friday-artsy-vava.html). If you allow me i need your name, the name of the art work, the materials and the year it was completed. Please Email me: e.s.taylor@hotmail.com
    Reply soon.

  16. It looks great.I guess it depends on the finished look you want. I've never done anything with chalk paint but I've seen a lot of things finished with it. Glazing reminds me a bit of what we used to call antiquing- but it's a better look! That would be so disappointing to have the waxed product end up feeling tacky. I like your piece that you finished- the shape is great!

  17. I love the glaze.. you're right it gives it a litle something more :)

Thanks so much for sharing this at the Weekend Wonders link party! Hope to see you back on Thursday Have a great day :)

  18. It's party time at Debt Free Mommy Blog and we'd love to see you there! Please come join us and link up to Making Space Mondays. We'd love to see any post(s) about making your spaces better. Thanks, Tabitha
