Image Transfer With Dixie Belle

There are quite a few techniques for transferring images onto painted surfaces, but my favorite method is using the clear coat from the Dixie Belle Paint Company.

Here's how it works...

I started by having my son cut a 2 x 4 into square blocks. I sanded the edges and then stained the blocks with General Finishes Java Gel.

I wanted to add an aged look by layering paint, so I painted one side of the block with the color Limeade...

Then I randomly dabbed on a little Cobalt Blue..
and Honky Tonk Red...

I let it dry, then covered the painted side of the block with the color Sea Glass...

When the Sea Glass was dry, I sanded the block to reveal some of the other colors...

I printed out an image that I found at The Graphics Fairy. The image will bleed when transferred if printed using an ink jet printer, so I took what I printed to Staples to get a laser printed copy. If your image has words, you'll need to print it in reverse.
I cut as close as possible around the image...

I gave the image a generous coat of the Dixie Belle Clear Coat...

and then placed the image printed side down on the block...

I let the image dry.
Then I sprayed it with water and gently began to rub the paper away to reveal the image...

A it dries, if there is a milky look to the image, spray it again and rub off more paper.
I finished it off by sealing it with the Dixie Belle Clear Coat.

Valentine Block

I love it when I find scraps of wood in my husbands' workshop that I can turn into something pretty. So, when I came across some small pieces of wood that had been cut from a 2 x 4, I knew they'd be perfect for this Valentine project.
I sanded the rough edges and then painted the block of wood with Dixie Belle paint...

While the block was drying, I drew a heart on watercolor paper. I painted the heart red and then added a little black to the edges...

I let the heart dry a little, but while it was still damp, I cut it out and then crumpled it into a ball...

This gave the heart texture...

I cut pieces of scrapbook paper into squares...

I added them to the block using ModPodge, leaving a little border around the edge...

I measured twine so that it would wrap around the block twice, wrapped it around the block, and glued it to the back with hot glue...

I glued the heart over the twine and wrapped another piece of twine over the heart and glued it on the back...

Finally, I tied a bow with twine around a metal key and glued it to the heart...

I was very excited when a lady named Christina asked me to come and lead this project with a group of young ladies at her daughter's 12th birthday party. Unfortunately, I was going to be out of town during the party. So, I put together kits for the group. Christina sent me pictures from the party and all the girls did a great job on their Valentine blocks!!!

Aren't they fabulous?
I love how different each one turned out.
Good job girls!
Hopefully next time I can be there in person to join in on the fun!

Antique Drawer Pull Jewelry

A few years ago I redid an armoire that was missing some of the hardware. Since I had to replace what was missing, I used the old drawer pulls to make jewelry...

So, when I had another piece with missing hardware, I decided to do the same thing with the leftover pulls. This time the drawer pulls were smaller and a little more simple...

I wanted to add some color, so I left the screw in and wrapped it with bakers twine...

Once I had as much twine on the screw as I wanted, I added a little tacky glue to hold the twine in place. I waited until the glue was dry and then cut the twine.

Since it then resembled a spool of thread, I chose charms with a sewing theme that I got at Michael's to make a necklace...

If you didn't know,
would you know
that it's a drawer pull?

I didn't think so!
