A Whimsical Welcome

Last week I posted about a store display that my son made using fence pickets. I had a lot of left over wood where he had cut the pickets to make smaller pieces for the front and sides of the display.

I couldn't let them go to waste, so one thing 

I made was this welcome sign.

The flower is a vintage jello mold...

I cut petals using tin snips...

I painted the "flower" using a red & pink enamel paint...

I first gave it a coat of red..

While the paint was still wet, I added some pink.

This gave it a marbled look...

Once the paint was dry, I glued a yellow button to the center of the flower using E6000...

Then I glued a smaller button to the yellow button...

I painted the piece of wood using a light blue acrylic paint...

Using my Dremel, I drilled 2 holes at one end of the board 

for a place to add twine to hang my sign.

I glued the flower onto the board and 

glued on green ribbon to act as the 

stem of the flower and leaves...

I spelled out "welcome" 

using wooden discs and letters from magazines.

Once I found the letters that I needed, 

I cut them out to fit the discs.

Then, using ModPodge, I placed the letters onto the disc.

I added another coat of ModPodge to the top.

 If the letters were too small, I covered the disc with a contrasting color from the magazine and then added the letter to the top as seen here with the "L".

Once all the letters were completed,

I glued them onto the board using E6000.

Most of the items used to make this sign were recycled.
