DIY Thankful Sign

It's November, the month of Thanksgiving.

This DIY Thankful Sign is the perfect addition to your Fall decor.

And, it's super easy!

I used my Cricut Maker to cut out the word, thankful, in vinyl. If you don't have a Cricut you can buy vinyl letters at craft & office supply stores.

I added the vinyl to a wood sign board from Michael's.

 To help prevent the paint from seeping under the vinyl, I painted over it with the sealer Gator Hide from The Dixie Belle Paint Company. This creates a barrier over the edge of the vinyl so you will get crisp, perfect letters when you peel up the vinyl.

 Once the Gator Hide was dry, I used a makeup sponge to pounce over the vinyl using the Dixie Belle paint color, Fluff. Using a makeup sponge also helps prevent the paint from bleeding under the vinyl.

 I used a brush to paint the rest of the board.

 Once I had painted two coats of Fluff, I pulled off the vinyl.

 I added Mod Podge to a corner section of the board...

 then I placed a napkin with pretty pumpkins over the wet ModPodge. The pumpkins are perfect for Fall, but you could use other napkins to keep the sign up year round. The layers of the napkin need to be separated or the paper won't stick properly.

 I tore off the extra napkin that came over the edge of the board and added more ModPodge on top of the napkin.

 I glued a mini clothespin to the opposite corner of the board.

 I added a family photo from my recent trip to Italy.

 The clothespin makes it easy to change out the photo.

Be Our Guest

I am in the process of redoing my guest bedroom. This will be the first of several posts to come with some of my DIY projects.

I'm starting by sharing this antique vanity mirror makeover. 

There's a long, sad story about how the mirror got separated from the vanity, but I'll spare you the details. Anyway, in the sad saga, the mirror fell off of the wooden back.

 I didn't need a mirror in the guest room, but saw potential for something awesome using the back. So, I removed the paper that was behind the mirror and began painting the wood with the color Fluff, from the Dixie Belle Paint Company.

 If you've ever painted on cherry or mahogany, you may have had what is known as 'bleed through'. The tannins in these woods will sometimes cause spots to appear through the paint.

 I stopped painting when I saw these pesky spots appear and grabbed the Boss. It stops both bleed through as well as odors. Once the Boss was on the entire piece, I finished painting.

 I added the phrase, "be our guest" by printing out the words and transferring them onto the piece with graphite paper. I filled the transferred letters in using the color, Caviar.

 I added three large hooks to the bottom of the piece.

 The hooks didn't come with screws and the ones I had were silver, so I painted over the screws with more of the Caviar.

 Now I have the perfect place for our guests to hang their coats, robes, purses, etc.

I thought this was going to be my favorite project in the guest room, but wait until you see the next one!

Cotton Pickin' Cute

I don't know about other parts of the country, but here in the South, just about every shop you go in sells cotton. Cotton wreaths, cotton garland, cotton stems, individual cotton bolls, all are abundant!

For this project, I used 3 of the individual cotton bolls.

I used a 1 x 9 x 14 inch piece of wood to make the sign. And, since there's a Southern theme going on, I used the color Muscadine Wine from the Dixie Belle Paint Company to paint the wood.

While the paint was drying, I picked a font I wanted to use and printed out the words, cotton pickin' cute.

I used the side of a piece of chalk to rub over the back of the paper.

I taped the paper onto the board and used a pencil to trace around the letters to transfer them onto the board.

Then I used a small brush to fill in the letters.

An acrylic frame could be glued onto the board, but I used Velcro so the the frame can easily be change from portrait to landscape.

With the frame in the portrait position I decided where the cotton should be placed, then glued it on with E6000.

I think it turned out pretty cotton pickin' cute!
