Painting Upholstery

Do you have a chair in great shape, but you hate the upholstery? Or, have you passed by perfectly good chairs at a yard sale or thrift store because you didn't like the upholstery?
It's an easy fix! Paint it!!!
I bought this chair at a local thrift store for $7.50. The fabric was dated, but in great shape.
I used a spray bottle filled with water to mist the fabric. This will help it to accept the paint.
I chose the color, Gravel Road, from the Dixie Belle Paint Company. It's a beautiful dark gray!

It took 3 coats to cover the pattern. I used a 400 grit sandpaper and sanded between each coat. Sanding is the key to getting a soft, smooth finish. I finished the chair off with Dixie Belle's Best Dang Clear Wax.
I also painted the wood with Gravel Road and I love the monochromatic look.

As with so many things, I have created a dilemma! Keep or sell? I think I may have to keep it!

  3. You would never know it was the same chair! I have seen this done quite a bit, but have never tried it for myself. I am planning on painting the sides of my outdoor cushions before I pull them out. The tops and bottoms are fine, but the sides mildewed a bit from the moisture. I washed them and will do that soon.

  5. I love that color. What a creative score. I would keep it too. I have a headboard that you have inspired me to try this on. We were so careful, but it still seemed to stain. This treatment is worth a try before I reupholster it. Thanks for the deets.

  11. I just saw your post on Hometalk I have not used Dixie Belle paints/waxes or any other chalk paint nor have I painted upholstery so this will be several firsts for me. I have a favorite rocker/recliner that will not match my new update for my living room and I am considering using this painting technique. It has a lot of tufts similar to your chair, so to reupholster would be difficult for me to do and expensive to have done. How long has it been since you painted your chair and is it still soft? And I also have nail head decoration on the front arm panel and the footrest---if I paint over them, will the sanding remove some/all of the paint to show the original color? I really don't want to have to cover each nail head with painter's tape and since I have never used chalk paint, I don't know how it will respond. Thanks and I love the color of the chair!

  12. I concur that Sofa isn't an effortlessly available thing. Indeed it is exceptionally costly. In the event that you are searching for a Calfskin cleaner at that point come to Marks Upholstery Cleaning Melbourne. They did best couch cleaning the whole way across in Melbourne . So employ them to get an inconceivable cleaning administration. I procured them and got inconceivably wonderful administration. They expel all stains from my Love situate. Presently it look like as it comes recently.
