Going In The Right Direction

No, this is not a post about a road trip.
Instead, it is about yet another side table!
I've been on a roll lately making tables!!!

I had an antique sewing machine base. As usual, I went back and forth on what to put on it to create the top. My mind starts spinning with all the options so it is hard to decide what to do!
I ended up buying this piece of wood...

I had this 1960 map of the Southeastern United States...

I used ModPodge to adhere the map to the wood...

I screwed the wood onto the sewing machine base and then moved outside for the fun part! Using a belt sander, I went over the map, removing pieces of it in some areas.
I also used the sander to round the corners of the wood.

Next, I used a dark stain to go over the entire table top...

 This aged the piece nicely!

I finished it off with a few coats of polyurethane to seal the top.

Now for my problem...
I keep making these tables to sell,
but they look so good in my house that I end up keeping them!
Sell or keep?
I'll let you know which direction I take on that!

  1. LOL -- Keep until you just have no more room for them. I love the old map -- isn't it fun to look at these and realize we (well some of us!) used to use these and watch our parents argue on trips about who was reading the map right?!

  2. Very cool table . . . I love it!
We converted our garage into a family room with a nautical theme. Because the opening to the attic is on the ceiling of that room, instead of trying to hind it, I framed it and covered the hatch with a nautical chart. It looks like it is intentionally part of the decor, LOL. It's a conversation piece, too.
This is why I love to blog . . . sharing and being inspired. I might just try doing that to a table in the future, like I say before, I love it!
    Have a sweet week,
    Your blogging sister, Connie :)

  3. I love using maps for decorating. This turned out great! I'd say keep the tables until you make the next one that you love even more--kind of like flipping houses.

  4. In my opinion, you can't go wrong with a map. I wonder how many of us are drawn to sheet music and to MAPS! If you could only see the huge box of maps which I've collected over the years... and I'd say keep the tables, seconding Gina's advice.

  8. Very nice, I love the distressed look. I think I’d want a piece of glass (or plexi) over the top, but that’s just me.
