Here's My Heart...

If you saw my Valentine mantel a couple of weeks ago, then you may have noticed my mixed media Valentine. It was inexpensive and easy to make and can be tailored to fit any color scheme. Here's how I made it...

I started with a 10" balsa wood heart that I bought at Michael's for $1.29. I picked out a vintage looking scrapbook paper and traced the heart onto the paper, then cut it out.

I used ModPodge to attach the paper to the wood. I had a few wrinkles, but that's okay, they disappeared as the ModPodge dried.  I sanded the edge of the heart to age it a little. I waited until the paper was almost dry but not completely, so that it would tear slightly in random places...

I used a damp rag to wipe on dark brown acrylic paint. Everywhere that I sanded is darker, and I lightly washed over the entire heart just to age it a bit.

Once everything was completely dry, I added a piece of Washi tape.

I found these cool corrugated cardboard tags at Michael's. Even though they have texture, I wanted to add a little something. So, I stamped a design onto the tag. I glued the tag onto the heart using tacky glue.

I wrote, Be Mine, on a circle tag (also found at Michael's), added it to a miniature clothespin, and glued it onto the heart. I also added some cute little paper flowers.

I felt like the tag needed a little something. So I pulled out these brass "thingies" that I bought at Scott Antique Market a long time ago and picked out this cute bug and added him to the tag...

I used my Dremel to add holes to the top of the heart and strung red wire through the holes.

This mixed media heart added the perfect touch to my Valentine mantel.
