July Fourth Banner

Time goes by so quickly! It seems as though I was just posting projects for Christmas, and suddenly it's already time for July 4th projects. 

This banner is a fun and festive way to show your pride 
in the stars and stripes.

To make this banner, you'll need...

12” x 12” scrapbook paper in red, white, & blue colors and patterns

Scissors

Ruler

pencil

Tacky glue

Small hole punch

Regular size hole punch

Brads

Cupcake liners

Buttons

Jute

Rubber stamp and ink, or red marker to write out 4^th

Strips of fabric or ribbon. I used denim and burlap.

Cut scrapbook paper in half so that you have 4 pieces that measure 12 inches high x 6 inches wide. Using a ruler, measure over 3 inches from the sides and up 3 inches from the bottom. Draw a line from each bottom corner up to the 3 inch mark to form a triangle. Cut out the triangle. This becomes the base for each section of the banner that we will call the pennant. 

Fold the top edge down approximately 1 inch.

To embellish each section of the banner, cut wide strips of scrapbook paper and glue to the pennant using Tacky glue. Flatten cupcake liners and glue to the center of the strip of paper.

Cut out letters to spell the word, JULY. I cut out letters using a white pattern paper and then cut the letters slightly larger to create a shadow in red. I used a Cricut to cut the letters, but you can buy letters pre-cut or cut by hand. Glue the letters to the cupcake liners that have been glued to the center of each pennant.

Add more cupcake liners, buttons, and pinwheels to embellish each pennant further.

To make a pinwheel, cut scrapbook paper into a perfect square. Cut from each corner towards the center of the square stopping about a half inch from the center. On one corner of each section that you just cut, make a hole using a small hole punch. Use the small hole punch to make a hole in the center of the square. Thread each section of the square onto a brad then place the brad through the center hole. Close the ends of the brad to secure.

For the “4^th”, cut a 4 inch circle out of the white paper. Cut another circle out of red paper slightly larger than 4 inches to form a shadow. Using a regular hole punch, cut a hole at the top of the two circles. Glue the circles together and add a piece of jute through the hole. Use a stamp to add “4^th” in red ink or hand write it using a marker.

Tie the circle to the center of a 6 foot piece of jute. Tie strips of fabric or ribbon onto the jute on each side of the circle. Add the pennants by gluing the jute into the fold created earlier. Add strips of fabric or ribbon between each pennant.

This is a fun project that the kids can help with too. It can be adapted to fit any holiday. While you're at it, you might as well make one for Christmas. It'll be here before you know it!
