Patriotic IKEA Lantern Makeover

If you are a regular visitor here, then this is not, nor will it be the last project where you have seen me craft with paper napkins.
ModPodge + Patterned Paper Napkins =
A Perfect Marriage!
Nothing is safe...I'll decoupage a napkin onto just about anything.
Like these jars...
My upcycled pickle and olives jars remain one of my top 2 most viewed and most pinned posts.

Another popular DIY project with napkins...
coasters...

I've even decoupaged napkins onto a chair...

More recently, I shared a variety of
4th of July projects using napkins...

You can find quite a few more when you search my blog,
but let's move on to lanterns.
Last year I shared how I made over an IKEA lantern for Fall using paper napkins...
You can get the full tutorial HERE.

Since I happened to have more IKEA lanterns,
and more napkins from my 4th of July craft frenzy,
I decided to make a Patriotic lantern.

I painted the lantern with Barn Red from
The Dixie Belle Paint Company...

Using the same technique for the Fall lanterns,
I added a blue and white napkin to the glass...
It appears a little milky in this picture but the ModPodge will dry clear.

Perfect for the 4th of July!

It goes great with my 4th of July mantel...
This one might have to stay out through Labor Day!

4th of July Crafts

Oh, what fun I had last week crafting for the 4th of July with my friend, Cindy! Cindy is the owner of Junk Mama's General Store, where I am a vendor.
Junk Mama's is in a beautiful old house built in 1916 in downtown Fayetteville, Georgia.
We had already decorated the front porch in anticipation of the 4th of July....

But, we still needed to create some patriotic things for the front room of the store.
So, Cindy came over and we got busy crafting. We were like a crafting machine! We got so much accomplished...

Let's start with my favorite project of the day...
this flag...
The base of the flag came from Michael's. The boards were raw wood already put together and with a rope to be able to hang it. Cindy painted it white, then I drew off the lines for the stripes. Then Cindy got started gluing paper napkins that looked like bandannas to the wood...

Once the ModPodge was dry, we took a little sandpaper and removed the excess napkin.
Using the same technique, I created a flag out of heart shaped wood...

I painted this craft store frame with white paint...
Then I covered it with the same blue napkin used for the flag.

Once it was dry, I added a printable that I got from
My Fabuless Life. Click HERE to download this printable and one other.

With extra scraps of the blue napkins, I partially covered these jars. Once dry, I added a red button and some red and white twine.

We added Dollar Store flags and twine to mason jars...

We dyed white rice with red and blue food coloring and layered it in jars, then added a candle...

My daughter, Carrie, helped us make a bunch of pinwheels...

And, Carrie, made red, white, and blue flowers from tissue paper...

I had bought this storage caddy at Hobby Lobby on the 70% off clearance aisle...
The metal baskets were already white, so I  painted the drawers with Yankee Blue and the rest with Barn Red chalk paint from the Dixie Belle Paint Company.

We covered the bottom of a hat box with the red napkins, and covered the top of the box with pieces of denim we cut from a pair of old jeans. We trimmed the top with ribbon and added a few fabric stars to the top...

We also made a 4th of July banner to add to the mantel at the store. Here's how the front room at Junk Mama's turned out...

I loved the flag so much that I had to make one for myself! I added a little dark brown glaze to mine to dirty it up a bit...

I also used the napkins to cover some pickle jars...

Then I pulled out my banner from last year, and a flag that Carrie made last year using burlap and fabric, and decorated my mantel...

I will NOT be taking this down on July 5th!
It may have to stay up for awhile.
Do you decorate for the 4th of July?
